generator -vs- alternator
My BF has a 83 xlh ironhead. The generator has crapped out. He is looking to replace the generator but I have to wonder if putting the conversion kit in for the alternator would be a better idea. I was hoping someone may have experianced the same problem and could give some insight! Thanks!

Typically an alternator requires less windings therfore is lighter and produces less heat as well even though the the current has to be rectified to DC.requiring a few more parts that can go wrong(diode trio and condensor) an alternator will typically produce higher amps as well..it would still be my personal choice... just my 2 bits worth

I own a 72 Ironhead and the generators suck. The aftermarket ones take a shit quick. Everytime you do anything it has to be polorized....I have an alternator conversion and I say its way better! Worth the price. And easy to install yourself
